About This Course

Welcome to "Understanding Mutual Funds: Types and Performance," a continuing education course presented by PNC Learning, fulfilling a partial requirement for FP Canada. In today's dynamic financial landscape, mutual funds offer a popular investment vehicle, but navigating their diverse types and assessing their performance can be complex. This course will demystify mutual funds, providing you with a foundational understanding of their structure, regulation, critical types, and how to effectively evaluate their performance.

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental definition and characteristics of mutual funds, including Net Asset Value Per Share (NAVPS) and the distinction between shares and units.
  • Grasp the advantages and disadvantages of mutual fund investments, from professional management and diversification to associated fees and suitability.
  • Explore the intricate structure and control mechanisms of mutual funds, including the roles of directors, trustees, fund managers, independent review committees, custodians, and distributors.
  • Delve into the regulatory framework governing mutual funds in Canada, including key National Instruments, disclosure documents like the Fund Facts and simplified prospectus, and the role of Self-Regulatory Organizations (SROs) such as the MFDA and IIROC.
  • Differentiate between conservative mutual fund types, including money market funds (with current and effective yield calculations) and mortgage mutual funds (residential vs. commercial, interest rate sensitivity).
  • Examine riskier mutual fund products, such as balanced funds (hybrid nature, glide path, maturity date), equity funds (standard, growth, index, derivatives), and specialty funds (limited objectives, global funds, associated risks).
  • Analyze mutual fund performance using various metrics, including the Sharpe ratio, and learn how to conduct performance assessments using comparison universes and benchmark indexes (S&P/TSX Composite, S&P 500, MSCI EAFE Index, DEX Universe Bond Index, Scotia Capital Markets 91-day T-Bill Index).
  • Master the systematic approach to selecting mutual funds, considering volatility, the Canadian Investment Funds Standards Committee (CIFSC) classification, investment philosophy (value, growth, sector rotation, momentum), process, and key performance indicators like simple vs. compound return, reward-to-risk ratio, and beta.
  • Understand the practical steps involved in mutual fund selection, from researching performance data and focusing on investment objectives to evaluating fees, fund size, and the consistency of management.

This course provides clear, concise, and actionable insights, equipping you with the knowledge to make informed decisions regarding mutual fund investments and empower you to better serve clients in this crucial area of financial planning.
