Drawing on key industry standards, including IEEE 242 and UL/CSA requirements, this course delves into the nuances of low voltage fuse technology and application.

You will gain a deep understanding of:

  • Different types of low voltage fuses, including current limiting, time delay, dual element, and HRC.
  • Key fuse characteristics such as let-through current and I²t (clearing energy).
  • The classification and standards governing various fuse classes (H, G, J, L, CC, K, R, T, etc.).
  • Methods for coordinating fuses to achieve proper selectivity in electrical distribution systems using Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) curves and ratios.
  • Protecting downstream equipment, such as cables, circuit breakers, motor starters (Type 1/Type 2), and transformers, by evaluating fuse let-through energy and bracing requirements.
  • Specific considerations and requirements for using fuses in DC applications, including derating based on circuit inductance.
  • Applying standard guidelines for fuse sizing for different loads (motors, transformers).
