About This Course

This course examines the science and techniques for promoting tree health and longevity through a focus on understanding soil conditions and improvements, establishing and maintaining root health, adopting strategies for training young trees, maintaining branch structure, utilizing pruning strategies and techniques, and planning and selecting trees based on site conditions.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • **Mastering Subsurface Dynamics**: Explore the critical relationship between soil, compaction, oxygen levels, and root health, unraveling common myths and misconceptions.
  • **Optimizing Tree Structure and Growth**: Learn about phytomers, cambial columns, and the nuanced hormonal balance (auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins) that dictate tree development, influencing everything from pruning strategies to long-term health.
  • **Applying Evidence-Based Pruning**: Understand the biological consequences of pruning, including reduction, removal, and specialty cuts, to promote structural integrity and extend tree lifespan.
  • **Navigating Environmental Factors**: Discover the impact of light pollution, climate shifts, and native vs. non-native species on tree vitality, alongside innovative approaches to stormwater management.
  • **Diagnosing and Managing Tree Stress**: Identify various biotic and abiotic stressors, recognize the early signs of decline, and differentiate between harmful pathogens (like white rot vs. brown rot fungi) and cosmetic issues.
  • **Challenging Industry Norms**: Critically evaluate prevailing practices in tree selection, planting, and risk assessment, armed with research-backed alternatives for superior outcomes.

Whether you're an arborist, landscape architect, engineer, or simply passionate about trees, this course offers a unique blend of scientific rigor and practical application, equipping you to be a leader in sustainable tree care. Transform your approach with knowledge grounded in science, not speculation, and foster healthier, more resilient urban and natural landscapes.
