About This Course

Explore "Stormwater Best Management Practices - Rain Catchment," a comprehensive course designed for professionals in stormwater, potable water, and wastewater engineering. This program delves into critical aspects of managing stormwater, moving beyond traditional retention methods to embrace innovative catchment and reuse strategies.

Led by Kent Halloran, a seasoned Water Compliance Engineer with decades of experience, this course provides a deep dive into the evolution of stormwater management. You'll understand the shift from simple detention ponds to sophisticated systems that recognize water as a valuable resource. The course addresses the environmental and urban challenges posed by increased impervious areas, flash flooding, and water pollution, and presents real-world solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding the historical context and challenges of conventional stormwater management, including the disadvantages of traditional retention ponds.
  • Exploring modern, better approaches to stormwater management, such as underground storage vaults, multi-functional park designs, and habitat-based solutions like created wetlands.
  • Examining successful case studies, including the transformation of a community park into a storm sewer project with integrated park improvements, and the development of a wetland park from an abandoned military base for habitat enhancement and water treatment.
  • Gaining insights into the practical applications of rainwater harvesting for various uses, from irrigation to gray water systems, and understanding the considerations for treatment levels based on ultimate use.
  • Learning about the importance of life cycle analysis in evaluating stormwater management options, including quantifying costs, benefits, and the impact of "externalities" that influence project success.
  • Identifying the benefits of rainwater collection and reuse, such as reduced potable water consumption, decreased runoff, pollution reduction, and compliance with future stormwater regulations.
  • Discussing the critical role of maintenance in the longevity and effectiveness of stormwater management systems, particularly buried facilities and pervious pavement.

This course emphasizes the paradigm shift towards viewing stormwater not as a nuisance, but as a valuable resource to be conserved and reused. Learn how to design, implement, and maintain stormwater solutions that are environmentally responsible, economically viable, and community-friendly.

Water Compliance Engineer, The Ohio State University

Mr. Halloran has worked for over 30 years in the field of stormwater, potable water, wastewater engineering design and construction. He has also worked as a design and construction engineer in the areas of municipal, industrial, and airport drainage among other areas. He serves as The Ohio State University’s water compliance engineer and has served as an adjunct faculty professor in the Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering Department (https://ceg.osu.edu/). He is also the faculty advisor for two student organizations. In the past, Mr. Halloran served as the town engineer for several communities and has promoted the concepts of sustainability throughout his career. Throughout his career he has encouraged the use of natural systems, such as constructed wetlands, and the conversion of retention basins using native wetland plants to improve stormwater retention, increase pollutant removal, and provide pollinator and wetland habitat. He earned a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and a M.E. degree in Environmental Systems Engineering from Clemson University. He is a licensed professional engineer in the States of Ohio and Idaho.
