Shallow Foundation Design, Construction and Repair

What You'll Learn

check_circleLearners will be able to explain the importance of conducting a site evaluation, including subsurface exploration, laboratory soil testing, and design soil profiles.
check_circleLearners will be able to select an appropriate shallow foundation type and design based on site evaluations and foundation function, including mat foundations, hybrid foundations, or slab foundations.
check_circleLearners will be able to assess the expected load types on a foundation to determine its bearing capacity and recommend strategies to increase bearing capacity, if needed.
check_circleLearners will be able to identify shallow foundation construction processes of grading and soil improvement, dewatering and drainage, excavating and underpinning, and building code compliance.
check_circleLearners will be able to handle special considerations that may be encountered in foundation design, including the presence of stratified soils, expansive soils, reinforced soils, and slopes.
check_circleLearners will be able to determine causes of foundation damage and appropriate repair techniques.

About This Course

This course explains how building sites for shallow foundation structures are evaluated, reviews applicable building codes, and discusses shallow foundation design, allowable settlement and consolidation, shallow foundation construction, basements as foundations, special considerations in foundation design, and the diagnosing and repair of foundation problems.

Beyond the design phase, the curriculum examines real-world construction practices, detailing site preparation, excavation, reinforcement, and concrete placement techniques necessary to ensure initial structural integrity. Rounding out the foundation lifecycle, the course addresses common field challenges and modes of failure. It provides an in-depth look at industry-standard diagnostic techniques and remediation strategies, including underpinning, settlement correction, and structural repair methods, offering a thorough understanding of how to engineer, build, and restore reliable shallow foundation systems.
