About This Course

This two‐hour course explores the principles of rain garden design, focusing on functionality, aesthetics, and site‐specific considerations. Topics include proper sizing, water flow management, and shaping techniques to optimize performance. The course also discusses design guidelines, instructions, and plant selection strategies.

This course emphasizes the significance of rain gardens in mitigating erosion and supporting local ecosystems by introducing terminology like rainwater vs. stormwater and exploring the broader environmental impacts on watersheds. It delves into practical aspects such as soil texture analysis, infiltration rate testing, and effective water movement systems, including permeable pavers, infiltration trenches, and innovative downspout management.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Mastering the art of designing rain gardens that are not only effective stormwater solutions but also aesthetically captivating, blending seamlessly with existing landscapes.
  • Understanding critical site analysis techniques, including soil testing and infiltration measurement, to correctly size and position rain gardens for optimal performance.
  • Learning about water movement strategies, from overland swales and permeable surfaces to hidden rain barrels and creative piping solutions, minimizing reliance on underground systems.
  • Gaining expertise in selecting appropriate plant palettes that thrive in varying conditions, from flood-tolerant and drought-tolerant species to those suitable for sun or shade, and for different soil types.
  • Developing skills in sustainable maintenance practices, such as proper mulching, erosion control, and understanding how rain gardens evolve and improve over time.
  • Exploring innovative approaches and solutions for challenging scenarios, including working with tight clay soils, compacted bases, or sloped terrains, while also considering cold climate performance.
  • Discovering how to integrate rain gardens into larger low-impact development (LID) strategies, including considerations for green roofing, berms, and bioswales.
  • Learning to effectively communicate the value and beauty of rain gardens to clients and the public, promoting ecological responsibility without sacrificing design appeal.

Whether you're a seasoned landscape professional or an enthusiastic homeowner, this course equips you with the knowledge and confidence to design and install rain gardens that are both environmentally responsible and visually stunning.
