About This Course

This is a course designed to prepare new managers or managers without formal training to develop their leadership skills. It consists of two sections: “Be Ready to Manage” and “Core Skills for Managers to Engage their Teams.”

Section 1, “Be Ready to Manage,” covers four videos presented by psychologists Peter Quarry and Eve Ash. The first video, “Get Ready to be a New Manager,” provides the four essentials that a new manager needs to demonstrate competence in their role. These are delegating well for best results, communicating and giving feedback, inspiring and empowering others. The second video, “What Should New Managers Do?” clarifies the roles and responsibilities of managers, including getting things done through others, clarifying expectations, building skills, developing and motivating people, inspiring people, aligning staff to the company vision, and agreeing on two-way feedback. The third video, “Challenges for New Managers,” provides strategies for new managers to embrace challenges such as learning to delegate, resetting priorities, managing poor performance, using counseling sessions to resolve ongoing problems, and escalating to disciplinary action only if necessary. The fourth video, “Leadership Sins,” presents a dramatized case study to demonstrate eight classic leadership sins and how managers can avoid them.

Section 2, “Core Skills for Managers to Engage their Teams,” covers five videos. The first video, “Power up with Strengths,” presented by leadership consultant Kylie Bell, explains how strengths play a vital role in wellbeing and productivity. It provides strategies for discovering strengths, shifting focus to strengths, and acknowledging and utilizing different strengths within a team. The second video, “The Importance of Delegating and Empowering,” explains how effective delegation leads to the empowerment of the entire team and how micromanaging can be avoided. The third video, “Delegation Challenges,” provides strategies for overcoming challenges that may arise in the delegation process. The fourth video, “Encourage your Champions,” explains how to recognize and encourage high-performing employees or champions. The fifth and final video, “Switch on Managers,” presents strategies for managers to build and maintain a positive and motivated team by being supportive, encouraging innovation and growth, recognizing individual contributions, and focusing on results.
