 Practical Fluid Mechanics

What You'll Learn

check_circleLearners will be able to identify and describe how fluid mechanics principles can be applied to several different situations in the natural and built environment.
check_circleLearners will be able to define hydrostatic pressure and explain how it exerts pressure on submerged surfaces, such as soil and building foundations.
check_circleLearners will be able to discuss and reference examples of shear stress on surfaces in the built environment and explain how structures can be designed to withstand these pressures.
check_circleLearners will be able to describe how a drop in pressure in a fluid pipeline can result in poor system performance and higher energy consumption.

About This Course

This course examines practical applications of fluid mechanics. Topics include a survey of various applications (including medical, pumps and compressors, and rivers and streams), theory and applications of fluid statics and dynamics, and numerous examples of fluid mechanics in action.

The curriculum provides a thorough examination of fluid statics, kinematics, and dynamics, demystifying essential concepts such as pressure distribution, pipe flow, viscosity, and Bernoulli's equation. By emphasizing practical problem-solving over abstract mathematics, the course demonstrates how fluid mechanics directly influences the design and operation of water distribution systems, aerodynamic structures, hydraulic machinery, and HVAC systems. This comprehensive overview offers the critical insights needed to analyze, model, and predict fluid dynamics in various industrial, mechanical, and environmental contexts.

Dr. Gregory H. Nail, PhD, PE

Associate Professor, University of Tennessee at Martin

Dr. Nail is an associate professor in the Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he teaches a variety of courses including fluid mechanics, hydraulics and hydrology, and hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. He holds a professional engineer’s license based on having passed both the civil and mechanical discipline-specific exams. Prior to coming to UT-Martin in 2002, he worked as a research hydraulic engineer for the United States Army Corps of Engineers for 11 years. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Tennessee American Water Resources Association, and he has lectured on various HEC-RAS modeling topics at the Annual Tennessee Water Resources Symposium and at other venues. Dr. Nail earned his B.M.E. degree from Auburn University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University.
