About This Course

This 6.5-hour course examines the design, construction, and maintenance of parking structures. Specifically, the course explores designs which maximize functionality, applicable building codes and accessibility standards, passive security, lighting, durability, and expected maintenance, restoration, and repair. The
course dives deep into the architectural design and structural requirements of cast-in-place and precast concrete parking structures, and analyzes the function and design of key structural components.

You will gain invaluable insights into:

  • **Design Approaches & Philosophy**: Explore how design choices prioritize user experience, owner investments, and community integration, ensuring a harmonious and efficient parking solution.
  • **Parking Planning & Site Selection**: Learn to accurately assess parking demand, optimize layouts for various user groups and site constraints, and master the art of efficient circulation and access point design.
  • **Structural Engineering Fundamentals**: Grasp the core principles of building robust and long-lasting parking structures, including material selection (precast vs. cast-in-place concrete), load considerations, and lateral load-resisting systems.
  • **Durability & Lifecycle**: Discover best practices in concrete durability, effective drainage design, and critical maintenance strategies to maximize the lifespan and minimize the operational costs of parking facilities.
  • **Code Compliance & Life Safety**: Navigate the essential building codes, fire protection requirements, and egress strategies to ensure accessibility and safety for all users.
  • **Architectural Integration & Sustainability**: Uncover innovative architectural solutions that blend seamlessly with urban landscapes while exploring sustainable practices and certifications like ParkSmart.
  • **Modern Operations & Technology**: Examine the latest advancements in parking management, from access control systems and automated enforcement to cutting-edge parking guidance and individual space occupancy solutions.
  • **Maintenance & Restoration**: Identify common degradation factors and learn effective repair and rehabilitation techniques to extend the service life of aging parking structures.
  • **Future Considerations**: Peek into emerging trends such as mechanical parking systems, autonomous vehicles, and adaptive reuse strategies, preparing you for the evolving landscape of parking.

Whether you're a designer, engineer, owner, or facility manager, this course offers a foundational and forward-thinking perspective on optimizing parking infrastructure for today and tomorrow.
