About This Course

This course begins by setting the stage with an overview of groundwater modeling's significance, followed by a thorough review of fundamental groundwater flow principles and solute transport mechanisms. We then delve into the different types of groundwater models, distinguishing between analytical and numerical approaches, and explore their respective strengths and limitations. A substantial portion of the course is dedicated to understanding numerical groundwater flow modeling, covering key aspects such as governing equations, spatial and temporal discretization, boundary conditions, and material properties. We will also dive deep into model calibration, sensitivity analysis, and effective result reporting. A significant highlight is an in-depth exploration of ModFlow, the industry-standard numerical code, detailing its modular design, processes, packages, and practical application. We conclude with illustrative case studies demonstrating both numerical and analytical modeling in real-world scenarios.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the key principles of groundwater flow and solute transport.
  • Differentiate between various types of groundwater models and their appropriate uses.
  • Grasp the process of designing and conceptualizing a groundwater model.
  • Comprehend the mechanics of numerical groundwater flow modeling, including discretization and boundary conditions.
  • Perform model calibration, sensitivity analysis, and interpret results effectively.
  • Navigate the ModFlow environment and its various modular packages for practical application.
  • Apply analytical modeling techniques to solve specific, well-defined groundwater problems.

Whether you are new to groundwater modeling or seeking to deepen your existing knowledge, this course provides a strong foundation for both becoming a proficient modeler and critically reviewing models in your professional endeavors.

Dr. Gordon McCurry, P.G

Dr. McCurry has more than 35 years of experience in hydrology, including the investigation, analysis and modeling of aquifer systems, and assessments of hydrologic impacts. His areas of expertise include the quantitative analyses of flow and solute transport, stream/aquifer interactions, climate change, regulatory permitting, and aquifer remediation. He has been involved with modeling groundwater flow and solute transport since the 1980s. In addition to his consulting career, Dr. McCurry has taught courses on groundwater modeling and hydrogeology since the early 1990s at several universities and to state and federal regulatory agencies
