About This Course

This 6‐hour course will cover the fundamentals of hydronic heating systems and radiant heating systems, discuss boilers, liquids, and heat exchangers, explore smart heating electrification, analyze radiant system design, and discuss the installation and operation considerations of these systems.

Key learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding hydronic system fundamentals, including benefits, definitions, and core components like heat sources, emitters, and distribution networks.
  • Gaining expertise in system components such as piping, pumps, air separators, expansion tanks, and various valves, alongside essential considerations for water treatment and controls.
  • Exploring different piping arrangements (open vs. closed loop, direct vs. reverse return, two-pipe vs. four-pipe, constant vs. variable flow), and leveraging tools like the HIAC BEST tool for cost-effective system design.
  • Mastering the intricacies of central plant equipment, including the history, classification, and operational differences between boilers (condensing, non-condensing, electric), chillers (vapor compression, absorption), heat pumps, and heat recovery units.
  • Delving into smart heating electrification strategies for decarbonization, focusing on integrating air source and water source heat pumps, understanding heat recovery loads, and exploring the benefits of geothermal and thermal energy networks, particularly in qualifying for IRA 22 tax incentives.
  • Acquiring foundational knowledge in radiant heating and cooling, including heat transfer principles, benefits, typical design parameters, and various slab construction methods.
  • Developing skills in zoning radiant systems, selecting and locating manifolds, and implementing effective water temperature control strategies for optimal comfort and energy efficiency.
  • Identifying and avoiding common installation and operational errors, ensuring successful project execution from design to long-term performance.

From foundational hydronic basics and component deep-dives to advanced discussions on heat pump technology, radiant system design, and the latest in smart electrification, this course equips you with the knowledge to design, implement, and optimize cutting-edge hydronic and radiant solutions for sustainable and high-performance commercial spaces. Join us to transform your understanding of environmentally conscious and cost-effective HVAC engineering.
