About This Course

This course is designed for tax advisors who assist their clients in going through CRA audits.
We'll discuss CRA audit statistics, best audit practices, dealing with difficult auditors, dealing with difficult clients, requests for digital data, audit interviews, and limits of the CRA's ever-expanding powers.

Led by a seasoned tax lawyer specializing in CRA audits, this course delves into key areas, including:

  • Understanding CRA Audit Powers: Explore the legislative basis for CRA's information-gathering and audit authority under the Income Tax Act, including sections 231.1, 231.2, and 231.6.
  • Navigating Modern Audit Trends: Learn how CRA utilizes data analytics, third-party reporting, public records, and anonymous tips to identify potential non-compliance, and discover risk factors that might trigger an audit.
  • The Shifting Landscape of CRA Enforcement: Gain insight into recent and proposed legislative changes, such as the controversial "Oath Proposal" and new penalty regimes, and their significant implications for taxpayers.
  • Responding to Formal Information Requests (RFIs): Understand the process for RFI issuance, potential grounds for disputing them, and the serious consequences of non-compliance.
  • Effective Audit Management Strategies: Equip yourself with practical tips for client preparation, managing interviews, maintaining professional communication with auditors, and documenting all interactions.
  • Post-Audit Procedures and Appeals: Learn about the reassessment period, the importance of filing a Notice of Objection, and avenues for taxpayer relief related to interest and penalties.

Whether you are an accountant, legal professional, or a taxpayer, this course provides the knowledge and tools to mitigate risks, ensure compliance, and protect your or your client's interests in the face of increasingly complex CRA audits. Master the art and science of audit defense with expert guidance.
