About This Course

This three-hour course examines concrete pavement jointing and detailing, focusing on best practices for design and construction. The course will explore the evolution and purpose of jointing, types and placement of joints, and key considerations for sustainability and long-term performance. The course explains the process for constructing pavement joints, including dowel and tie bar use, sealants, and proper layout design.

Because concrete naturally shrinks and expands with temperature variations and moisture loss, strategic jointing is the primary defense against uncontrolled cracking and structural failure. This course provides a comprehensive overview of how to properly design, space, and execute various pavement joints, including contraction, construction, and isolation joints. Beyond joint placement, the curriculum delves into vital structural details such as load transfer mechanisms, dowel bar alignment, tie bars, and joint sealing techniques. Dive into the mechanics of concrete movement and discover the industry standards and best practices required to ensure long-lasting, high-performing concrete pavements that withstand both heavy traffic and severe environmental conditions.
