About This Course

Join veteran CFO and course creator Stephen Priddle for an engaging and practical exploration of ethical dilemmas in the world of finance with the course Applied Ethics In Accounting And Business. Unlike traditional, dry compliance lectures, this course utilizes real-life stories, humor, and many case studies to bring ethical challenges to life. It is designed to move beyond the theoretical and place you directly into the shoes of accounting professionals facing difficult moral and professional battles.

Ethical decision-making is the bedrock of the accounting profession, but real-world scenarios rarely present themselves in black and white. Through a series of mini-cases and longer narratives—ranging from fundraising dilemmas to potential corporate fraud—this course helps CPAs and other accountants sharpen their ethical radar. You will explore how to navigate pressure from management, handle conflict, and maintain integrity when the path forward is unclear.

This comprehensive course covers a wide array of topics derived from actual experiences and industry scenarios, including:

  • Fundraising and Investor Verification: Navigating the "Investor Claim Dilemma" and understanding the ethical obligations regarding accredited investors.
  • Corporate Governance: Managing disputes between business partners and the conflict between Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) and Unanimous Shareholders Agreements (USA).
  • Fraud and Collusion: Analyzing "Collusion at the Top" within non-profit organizations and strategies for dealing with compromised leadership.
  • High-Stakes Pressure: The "Case of the Knock at the Door," examining data security, foreign interference, and extortion threats.
  • Truth in Business: A critical look at "white lies," false advertising, and the slippery slope of dishonesty in professional environments.
  • Complex Transactions: The "Renland Inc." case, focusing on related party transactions, offshore entities, and questionable sales practices.
  • Consulting Ethics: "The Municipal Opportunity," exploring the dangers of predetermined conclusions and political pressure in consulting engagements.
  • Professional Relationships: navigating the difficult dynamics of hiring friends, discovering embezzlement, and managing possible board conflicts.

By the end of this course, participants will be better equipped to identify red flags in financial reporting, executive behavior, and daily operations. You will learn practical strategies for fighting ethical battles, understand the severe implications of compromising on truth, and gain encouragement from the shared struggles of other professionals. Whether you are in public practice, industry, or consulting, this course offers the insights needed to protect your reputation and uphold the highest standards of the profession.
