This comprehensive course, building on the "Aging the What Every Professional Needs to Know" series, delves into critical, often-overlooked areas impacting older adults and professionals alike.

Gain a clear understanding of the legal issues surrounding family caregiving, privacy rights, end-of-life planning, and the pervasive problem of elder abuse. Discover the legal frameworks in Canada that govern these areas, including:

  • The nuances of informal and formal caregiving, including the financial and societal impact, and current legislation affecting caregiving leave and support.
  • The intricacies of privacy law, distinguishing between federal and provincial regulations, and its application in contexts ranging from banking to institutional care ("granny cams").
  • The importance of proactive personal and professional planning, covering topics like Powers of Attorney, advance healthcare directives, wills, and succession strategies to ensure stability for both you and your clients.
  • A detailed examination of elder abuse and neglect, exploring its definitions, diverse forms (physical, emotional, financial), indicators, underlying dynamics, and the critical responses available through community, civil, and criminal avenues.

This course equips you with the knowledge to recognize legal risks, respond confidently to difficult situations, and provide informed guidance to older clients and their families. Prepare yourself for the realities of an aging population and understand your ethical responsibilities in navigating these delicate legal landscapes.
